I got an email today from one of the higher-ups of the company, doTERRA, that I buy my essential oils from. I have becoming increasingly more inspired by what these oils have done, and continue to do for my and my family's health.
About a month ago, I got really sick. Right before Christmas. The week before we were supposed to leave town for a business trip, that meshed into a family trip, right before Christmas. Turns out, I tested positive for H1N1. Since I was diagnosed with Grave's disease, my immune system seems to be compromised. I catch everything. I never used to get sick.
Once, I started getting symptoms, I immediately went on the essential oil anti-viral regimen (2 drops of Oregano, 2 drops of Lemon, 2 drops of On-Guard (an oil blend that strengthens the immune system) in a capsule--3 times a day). On the second day, I decided to go to the doctor, just to get a diagnosis. Sure enough--Swine Flu. I had it bad. Fever, headache, nausea, fatigue, sinus congestion, cough, not to mention the razor blades in my chest. I immediately called my dear friend, Natalie, who I affectionately refer to as my Guru. That night, bless her heart, she came over with a whole slew of oils in her hands. She gave me an amazing spinal treatment, using Oregano (kills virus and bacteria), Thyme, Peppermint (which reduces fevers and settles upset stomach), and a massage blend called Aroma touch. Then she put a hot compress on me, and let me stew.
The next morning, I was amazed at how much better I felt. I could breath. I could get out of bed, and get things done to get ready for our trip in two days. By the day after that, I was almost completely better.
So, I thought I should copy paste a part of this email I got, that gives very specific instructions on how to prevent colds and flu from onset. I figure prevention is way better than trying to get over it once it's already in your system.
"It's funny that to many of our neighbors and friends Wendy and I are known as the Oil people. I wonder if they picture us flitting around the house in light flowing saffron fabric clothes, spritzing the air with lavender and patchouli oils as incense and diffusers are filling the air around us.
Of course that is until they've had it with weeks of flu like symptoms, they've lost their voice, and they've broken ribs from all the coughing. They have rashes from the anti-biotic that the doctor gave them that don't work on the flu anyway! (Antibiotics will not work with virus, only bacteria)
This is when they finally knock on the door, where we are greeted with the old axiom... "I'm willing to try anything; do you have an oil for this?"
This is quite discouraging to seasoned oilers who understand how essential oils work and how virus spreads. Even more discouraging that they would not trust you enough to try the oils until there was literally no other option.
What we know about flu virus is that once it enters the body through a mucus membrane, it attacks human cells very aggressively. Depending on the victim's immune system, it will take only a short time before the victim begins to feel symptoms. If you start to fight it aggressively at that point, it is likely that the severity and length of the sickness will weaken.
However, if the first symptoms are ignored or if little or no action is taken, you might find yourself in the middle of a health battle that will take some time and great effort!
Thus, the best way to combat cold and flu virus in the beginning is three fold...
1) Prevent virus from entering a mucus membrane.
2) Keep your body's immune system strong so virus is attacked and stopped before starts to spread.
3) AT THE ONSET (ATO) aggressively use essential oils and other tools to kill what virus has already started.
Cold & Flu Prevent--10 basics of prevention.
At the last doTerra convention, what prevention method did Dr. Hill bring up first?
1. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough sneeze or wipe your nose. Tissues should be discarded immediately in a wastebasket.
This is more prevention for others in your family or in school, or the work place. But you should also be very aware of what you are touching with your hands. Do you wash your hands after using any facilities? Do you use a paper towel to turn off water faucets, or open or close stall and bathroom doors?
I do not use drinking fountains at all during flu season.
2. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Discard the tissue immediately in a waste basket.
Again, in consideration of others.
3. Run your diffuser often in your home and at work. What oils? Any oil would be good, but consider On Guard for sure. It was developed to boost our immune systems, and guard us against pathogens. I hear it humming away right now as I write. We have several teachers in our kid's school running them during class time.
4. While we are talking on guard, I would also consider rubbing your children's and your own feet with on guard every night before bed time and every morning before they put shoes on for the day. Not only is it a bonding experience for you and your children, but it will bolster there immune systems.
5. Consider misting your family's bed sheets with a spritz of essential oils before bedtime. 10 drops of on guard or some other essential oil with a ¼ cup of water in a spray bottle - shake well. We sometimes use serenity which will both kill pathogens and can help induce a deeper sleep.
6. When doTerra started carrying Melissa essential oil, Dr. Hill recommended a daily routine during cold and flu season of 1 drop of Melissa and 1 drop of On-Guard under the tongue each morning. Great for boosting the immune system.
7. Put about 1 drop of lemon and 1 drop of lime essential oil for every 10-12 oz of water you and your family drink. Over time this will greatly strengthen the immune system. In our home, we have not had colds or flu of any significance in over a year since we started incorporating essential oils in our household. And this is one have been consistent with.
8. As always, as you clean regularly around your home, use essential oils to clean. Purify, On guard or lemon in a spray bottle used for cleaning will assure pathogen free surfaces.
9. Take care of your body! This might be as or more important than any preventive oils you can take. You must get regular sleep - 8 hours continuous. No late nights or strange hours. Eat healthy food, plenty of fruits, vegetables and water, especially during flu season!!
10. Make your home a happy place, free from stress. A haven with kind words and positive thoughts. Make home a place of safety and refuge. As storms rage on, have your home be a house of prayer, gratitude, health and love.
These are all things we can do that will create of synergy of protection for your home and family."

The Next Gordon Ramsay?
I got a new i-Touch for Christmas. And my kids have taken it over. I found today that it has 450+ photos and videos on it. They've been having a lot of fun, apparently. This video was a sweet surprise. There are probably 5 "cooking shows" from my little guy making different 7-yr-old friendly food items.
I get such a kick out of the brilliant, creative mind of that boy.

How NOT to survive while your husband is away on a business trip
Why does all the crazy stuff only seem to happen when my husband goes out of town? Fall is kind of his crazy time of year. Business slows down, so that's when the company schedules all of its business meetings and trips. C left for Florida on Tuesday morning. I've gotten used to it. I've lived with his traveling alot for many years now. But a girl can only take so much chaos on her own.
Tuesday started out as a normal everyday Tuesday. Sort of. My plan was to wake up early for a run, so I could be back before C left for the airport. Only, B has taken to coming into my room at 2 am every night crying about nightmares, so I didn't get much sleep, and therefore didn't wake up at 5 to run. Instead, I slept in, kids missed the bus, and I raced to the gym for a quick Pilates class that I knew I wouldn't be able to finish because B had play group at 10:00. Then, I went visiting teaching which usually takes about 2 hours longer than scheduled. I can't figure how to make it shorter. Seriously.
After a doctor's appointment, and rushing home for piano lessons, my day was already a little hectic. Tuesday is my long day for piano, too. I have 7 students in a row with now breaks. AND the girl's singing group practices, which are normally on Wednesdays, were changed to Tuesday for a recording session. So somehow between all of my piano lessons, I had to drive K and B, separately, to and from singing. So, when I got back from dropping B off, I had one more student left, and then I was home free. BUT,
I got home, and there were 2 "sister missionaries" on my door step. I'd forgotten that I'd signed up to participate in our ward's YM/YW activities in which the kids dress up, and act like missionaries. I was supposed to feed them dinner, and they would teach us a discussion to our family. I let them in, and my last student at the same time. I didn't know what to do. So, I had them sit in my living room, and listen to me teach my last piano lesson, then I loaded my T & K, and the two YW into my car, brought them with me to pick up B, and then drove them to the Wendy's drive thru for dinner.
I really don't think it gets any more white trash than that!
I survived Tuesday, thinking surely, it couldn't get any worse!
But, then, I woke up on Wednesday. Boy, did I speak to soon!
Luckily the kids actually caught the bus, because when I got out to drive to the gym, the car wouldn't start. I tried for 10 minutes, finally got it started, and instead driving to the mechanic, I went to the gym instead. Hey, I had steam to blow off, I needed it. After my class, I called the Chevy dealership, and they told me to bring it in.
Thankfully, they gave me a rental car to drive home, so B wasn't late for school, and I would have a way home. It's a sweet ride. Probably the ugliest color of florescent blue I've ever seen, and it could probably fit in the back of my Tahoe. I'm not used to driving little cars, but at least I have something to drive, so no complaining.
I got a call from the mechanic late in the afternoon telling me the final diagnosis was a bad fuel pump, and it's going to cost $1000 to fix it. I called around to different mechanics, and there were a few that were slightly cheaper, but the dealership offered a lifetime warranty, so I went with it.
So, sorry kids, this year, instead of presents for Christmas, we get a new fuel pump for the car!
Happy Holidays!
Guess we'll wait to see what today brings.

Coolest Orthodontist in Utah!
I'm serious! Although, I really have no basis for judgement, being that I've never seen the inside of an orthodontist's office in my life. And I'm thankful for that, believe me. But, if my teeth ever suddenly went crooked, or say, my kids need braces, THIS is the place I'd go.
Pobanz Orthodontics. So much more than a place to get braces.
Last Friday, I attended a fun little event put on by Mormon Mommy Blogs, Newspapergrl.com and Pobanz Orthodontics, in South Ogden.
This is the photo for people who didn't forget to call a babysitter for their kindergartner, and therefore were able to arrive on time. (Hence the reason I do not appear in this lovely photo).
Chris, Amber, Janet, Veronica, Lori, Lesa, Kendra, Jessica, Cassie, Andrea, Judy, Elisa, Dr. Pobanz
We learned about the different types of braces, and new and cutting edge methods for fitting them. I was amazed at the different options there are. We learned about a new type of braces called Damon braces, where the braces work faster to straighten the teeth than normal ones. We also learned about a cool procedure where they actual use a machine to shape the braces instead by hand. I also learned, most importantly for me, that I need to bring my kids in for a FREE consultation to see if their teeth are growing in the way they should, even if they are too young for braces just yet.
Something that really interested me was Dr. Pobanz presentation about a new method to help kids stop sucking their thumb. He explained that thumb sucking can cause mouth and teeth deformation. I never realized that, I always just thought it was a bad habit. Dr. Pobanz has a very positive approach to helping kids. Instead of the traditional negative response to thumb sucking (the spiky thing they used to put on kids' thumbs, or in my family's case--Tabasco sauce), he uses a contraption that actually gives kids something to play with in their mouth to keep them from wanting to suck their thumb. Check this out, it's pretty cool.
We all got fitted for a teeth whitening kit. I've had one before, but I could tell just by the feel of the trays that these are really good quality. I'm excited to use mine!
Dr. Pobanz gave us a very imformative presentation on how to shop for an orthodontist and what to look for. Dr. Pobanz also illustrated to us how he and his staff put the fun into orthodontics (the most memorable being that everyone in their office seems to have a thing with playing dress-up).
We were also giving a presentation by Elisa at MMB and Janet at Newspapergrl.com on how to write a review post (I hope I'm doing it right), and SEO. Very informative!
Afterwards, we were fed a yummy lunch, and were given some serious loot! Not only did we get the teeth whitening kit, but also a really nice electric tooth brush. I got mine out and used it last night, and it's awesome!
But, the best part of the day was the drawing. I won an Ipod Nano touch! In PINK! You can't tell, but I have my whitening trays on in the picture. Super cute, right?
Thank you to Dr. Pobanz, MMB and Newspapergrl for a fabulous time!
Pobanz Orthodontics. So much more than a place to get braces.
Last Friday, I attended a fun little event put on by Mormon Mommy Blogs, Newspapergrl.com and Pobanz Orthodontics, in South Ogden.

Dancing Queen!!
Even though I'm the world's worst dancer, and I've been told by many a choreographer that I have two left feet, and even though our ward "talent" show was on my son's 7th birthday, I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to humiliate myself in public, while jamming out to some ABBA.
You've been warned.

Networking Event for Weber/Davis County Bloggers
Hi Friends--
I'm forwarding this message to you from my friend Elisa, owner of Mormon Mommy Blogs.
MMB is holding a FREE event on Friday, November 5th from 10am to noon, for bloggers in the Davis/Weber county areas.
It will be located in South Ogden and there will be short presentations on what to look for when shopping for Orthodontists, How to write a review post and SEO Blogging Tips. You will walk away with a free lunch, a $200 bleaching kit for your sparkling teeth and an amazing teeth cleaning kit for you to giveaway on your blog. Oh. And don't forget the chance you will have to win the door prize of a brand new I-Pod.
Send an RSVP as soon as possible to let us know if you are still interested so that we can plan the lunch accordingly. It's going to be one awesome catered lunch, girls! You don't want to miss out. If you have any friends that are bloggers and live in the Davis/Weber County area and think they would be interested in attending, go ahead and forward this on to them and let us know as well. We want to plan accordingly!
We look forward to your prompt reply!
You don't have to be a big time blogger, or even update your blog often. This is just a networking event for a local orthodontist to get the word out about his business, through friends and neighbors. So, one day, when your neighbor across the street says "Johnny needs braces," you can say, " Oh, I know a guy!"
The only thing you are asked to do is come, and then write a little something about it on your blog.
I'm going. Who's with me?
If you are interested, please email me or Elisa, or leave a comment, so they can get a count.
Thanks!

Blog? what blog?
I have completely lost my blogging mojo. Not so much that I want to delete my blog, but definitely so much that I have lost all desire to write anything or post anything on my blog.
Recently (i.e. 2 months ago), I started a project of turning the past 3 years of my blog into a book. I started 2 months ago, and the last time I worked on it, was 1 month and 28 days ago.
Maybe the season of my life to blog has passed. It's not like I don't have time. My baby is in kindergarten. I have a whole 2 and a half hours to myself in the afternoons. I've been spending that time doing things like going to lunch with friends, going to the movies (ok, I only did that once), and racing down to Lehi to doctor my ailing sister with my new found passion: essential oils.
I have used them on all of my family members. My sisters started calling me the Voo-doo witch doctor. My 18-year-old brother asked me if it's conspiracy. Ok, it IS an MLM, but still. I totally, whole-heartedly believe is this stuff. It works. That's all I need. I feel 200% better than I did two months ago, and I attribute it to using essential oils.
So, yeah, I've invested my devotion elsewhere. I suppose my passion for blogging has run its course.
This weekend for UEA, we are throwing a 7-year-old SuperHero birthday party. yay.
Wish me luck.
