I'm Calling For a Collection....

A collection of People. Who are willing to render their services. Because I have something that I just can't do on my own.

I need your help.

To help me tackle this:

The massive overgrown jungle otherwise know as my yard.

Oh, it gets worse.

See what I mean?

This is our sand weed box.

When we put in our yard, I got just a little overly ambitious about having a yard full of beautiful flower beds. Now they are just dandelion-morning glory-and-other-noxious-weeds-meant-to-torment-me beds.

I have tried everything to get rid of the weeds. I have put down that black weed barrier stuff. I have spread bark. I have sprayed the week killer crap that promises on the bottle that nothing will grow back after up to 4 months. Key words: "up to." They put "up to" so that I can't sue them when weeds start growing back in less than a week after spraying.

So, now all I can do is get out there, on my hands and knees, and pull weeds til my fingers bleed. I've done 4 beds now. It takes me about 3 hours to weed one bed. And three of the 4 beds that I've weeded are now already infested with weeds again.
Any suggestions?

Or does anyone want to come over and help me tackle this massive jungle? I can't pay you. But at least you'll get the satisfaction of knowing you helped me.

I'll give a free CD to anyone willing to show up and weed my yard for with me.
Seriously.

I can't decide what I would rather have: a yard that looks like yours that I could do whatever I wanted with (and make my knuckles bleed in the process), or have a RIDICULOUSLY high HOA (homeowner's association) fee so that someone else will come and pull the weeds in my pea-sized yard.

To tell you the truth, I'm kind of jealous.

I say..let those pretty little flowers grow. Or not..if you find a group willing to help, send them to my house when they are done at yours!!

Just put on your bikini while you're out there. Think of the tan you'll get!

My yard is SOOOOO much worse. See, I have 3 ginormous pine trees in the front yard. Nuff said.

Blame it on the rain.

I guess you can just spray every week for a while and see if it makes a difference?

Good luck! I hate taking care of yards, and my yard proves it.

Yeah. Yard work. Blah.

I think I have you beat on the yard thing. Ours is such a freaking eyesore it's embarrassing. I hate weeds.

Tell you what. I won't help you with the weeds, but I will help you eat a delicious brownie sundae at Applebee's, on Friday.

That makes me hyperventilate just looking at it and knowing the same thing awaits me out my back door!
ARRRRGGHH!!

Wish I could help you....a little too far for weed pulling. I love flowers, but I like them contained in pots. I have planting beds with shrubs, trees, weed barrier and the "perma bark" which they should just call rock. I still have to do a little weeding, but nothing like I used to. So, that's what I would suggest.

I feel your pain. I cannot keep up with the weeds in my flower beds either!

And my yard isn't nearly as nice!

Good luck...I guess we could have a weeding party...first at your house, then at mine!

Thanks for coming over...I hope I do the Bucket Fillers justice!

If I had a house with a yard... and I had to take care of it...I guarantee... my yard would be worse! Just saying! :)

My yard is VERY similar except we have a huge veggie garden plot as well. What I have done in the past is take shovels to the larger weeds and then once it's weeded put a really good mulch down. I would come up and help really I would but unfortunately my hands are being tied by the bind weed that is in my own yard.

I think it looks lovely just the way it is. jk.

You probably won't like this, but you've got to fill it with other things, or no matter what the weeds will take over. Find some of your favorite perinnials (sp?) and fill it up as much as possible and then fill in the gaps with annuals. It's the only way to really choke out the weeds.

I've been weeding for weeks and I feel like I've barely made a dent. Tonight for FHE we had a lesson on learning to work hard. We learned by doing. Now I've only got one more garden to go. Woo! But really? By the time I get to the last garden it'll be time to start over.

Yards are definitely sooo much work. I agree with Rachel. You do need to fill it up with stuff and then weeding becomes easier. I love to get out in the yard on all fours. May I help??

Do you have a good shovel and rake and hoe? Just start attacking it!

Ok, first off, feel very happy. My backyard is half dirt. As in desert *sand*.

oh, and weeds, lots of weeds.

When we visit local parks, my kids don't run to the slides or swings. They go straight to the grass and pull up little blades in their hands. "Look, mama! It's grass!" they say. "Yep," is my reply. "Someday we'll get some." Five years later, we're still hoping...

Good luck on your yard. And just remember, grass is always greener on the other side. ;)

I don't get what the problem is...

That is what my entire yard looks like since we haven't put in our yard yet. Last summer I spent hours weeding our dirt. I don't know what I was thinking. Now it looks like a jungle again and it happen so quick. Let me know when your going out to work on it. I'll bring Ava and help you out. Although my belly may prevent me from the best weed puller. :)

I pay my kids $5 per bucket of weeds they pull. Jayden loves it and is so proud that he knows how to correctly pull a weed. It's worth a try..

Creepy that we both posted about weeds.

And I would come help. Weeding with a friend is MUCH funner (more fun?) than doing it alone.

All I can say is: AT LEAST THEY WEREN'T ALL OVER YOUR YARD. Also, we got some Scott's spray weed-n-feed that has worked fabulously.

Sherrie,
I swear by PREEN. (I'm not sure if that is what you were using before) It doesn't kill existing weeks, but it stops seeds from germinating. So weed one garden/section and then sprinkle it on. It works great. I never weed except to get the occasional small one that comes up. I know it when it is time to reapply because the weeds start coming and I hurry and reapply. Give it a try, but either way you have to weed what's there first....

Maybe you could pretend that is how you want it? You know--going green, using less water and fertilizer sort of thing?

If that doesn't work--I'll send you photos of my "NO" yeard--just a forest--makes your look like it is from a magazine.

I already bought a CD---hate weeding--maybe I could make you lemonade--with no white sugar....

Oh Sherrie, Sherrie, Sherrie, I'd love to have your problem. If only I had the time to come over and weed your beds! Weeding is the most fun pastime in the world! And no, I'm not being sarcastic. Alas, I leave for Italy in 1 week and have too much to do to get ready. You know, get a pedi, a bikini wax, shop for cute clothes and shoes, get some makeup.
So sorry I can't help this time! Check with me mid-June!

I say solicit the Young Men and Women to help you weed it out. They are always looking for service projects to do. I'm envious of your yard, tho! I would kill to have all that gardening space (that dogs won't trample over and kill and pull out). I'm an avid gardener with very little space and two dogs who love to dig out whatever I plant. Grrr

Jen said...

Oh, and the best time to weed is RIGHT after the rain! They come up wonderfully by the root.

The YM/YW are doing a service scavenger hunt tonight. I'll see if they'll go to UT.

I have had Luvpilot home this week working his butt of on our yard. I feel bad because it's 99 outside. But happy that it's getting done!

Sarah said...

Sorry Sherrie, but I have my own little infestation to take care of, and as a former neighbor you know just how bad I am at that!

I say till it up and plant grass. That's what we did. (:
