I must be Sabotaging myself.

I've been whining and complaining for months about how I've had all of this unexplained rapid weight gain, that I just can't lose. I've ruled out pregnancy. I haven't stopped exercising. I really think I've been eating pretty well. I've considered the possibility, that I actually AM getting older, and that maybe my naturally fast metabolism might be slowing down. But, I just can't accept that.

I was talking to my sister on the phone today, and she suggested maybe I have some kind of thyroid problem or something, and maybe I should go to the doctor.

HA!

I can just see it:

Woman in her early 30's, in relatively good shape, gets laughed at in Doctor's office for being 10 pounds more than she thinks she should be.

Yeah. That would be freakin' hilarious.

Then it dawned on me. I have made a different batch of cookies every day this week. I am typing this post, whilst munching on double chocolate chip cookie dough.

Hmmmm......coincidence? I think not.

So, here are my questions for you. Especially those of you in your 30's and beyond. Did you notice a drastic change in your ability to lose weight and/or keep weight off once you reached your 30's? What works for you? Do you have to count every calorie? (I've never really done this before--except I did Weight watchers online once. I kept track of all my exercising...then ate 2 dozen cookies, but didn't write that down, because it didn't count if I exercised)

Do you have a diet that works for you? (and by diet, I mean your eating habits, not some fad eating nothing but salami or cabbage for 8 weeks)

I want comments people! What works for you? What doesn't?

Because eating cookies all day everyday, and trying to run it off, ain't working for me anymore!

YOu know, it's interesting. I will be 31 in May. About 6 years ago, I lost a bunch of weight. And in the past 2 months, I've been exercising again, and doing the Weight Watchers Points, and I haven't really noticed very much weight loss.

But, I don't weigh myself, I just go by how clothes fit.

I am 36 and at least for me it has been harder for me to lose weight as I have gotten older but when I am really diligent about not eating snacks, that is when I notice the difference. Stop making cookies.

Clearly nothing works for me.

Sherrie, I only thought you were soloing because it seemed implied in your post but maybe not. But I still think its cool that you got into that choir, really.

Not a good one to ask. I've taken diet and exercise to far. Proabably because in my lat thirties it all got away from me!!

I have no help for you. I am 32. I swear, on my 31st birthday, my stomach pooch started growing. I never had one before. I also weighed 147 for like 15 years, and then when I turned 31 it started creeping up. I'm now 151 (and 6 feet tall, so it's an okay number). No, I never exercise, besides Wii Fit, which I'm sure makes me exert thousands of calories each day. I don't watch what I eat either. It will start catching up with me soon, I'm pretty sure. Then I will start exercising. I will never give up chocolate. Never.

It didn't really hit me until I was 40 but I am sure I noticed a metabolism slow down when I turned 30ish, as well. However, if the ten pounds went on very quickly, you SHOULD have your thyroid tested. I am hypothyroid--it def makes you gain weight and feel sluggish and have less energy and it is SO nice to get those meds!

My secret to managing your weight is to get enormously fat on cookies and brownies and then die.

Clearly, my secret needs a little work.

And, while I'm sure Erin is a lovely woman with numerous redeeming qualities and the kind of spirit that makes everyone want to know her and be just like her, at six feet and 151 pounds, she automatically qualifies for my "People I Resent" starter kit: It includes a photo of me sticking my tongue out and a little recording that says over and over again, "Yes, those jeans DO make your butt look big!"

Please tell her I'm sorry.

I am sure you right that cookies are not your best friend right now. Your daughter looks even cutier dipped in chocolate. Did you munch on her too?

Yes, my metabolism slowed down after I turned 30. I used to be able to think weight loss and it would happen. Now I've found that if I'm exercising it has everything to do with what I put in my mouth. And that batch of chocolate chip cookies I just made...It ain't helpin'!

I'm a sucker for cookie dough...and brownie batter is even more dangerous. I've just stopped baking goodies for the most part. But that doesn't help because I buy them instead. Oops.

Yep. I had my first two kids in my late twenties, and while the weight didn't come off easily, it did come off. I had my youngest when I was 32 and the weight didn't budge no matter what I did, till I went on the hcg diet. I'm still about 15 pounds more than I'd like to be, but I'll take it.

The thing that is helping me to not gain anymore weight is to make sure I get enough protein, and to never eat a carb unless I've eaten protein right before. It makes a huge difference. So eat all the cookies you want, just make sure to match it with chicken or eggs or something. :)

I know that it's harder for me to lose weight in my 30's but I also haven't been trying very hard.

I would be ecstatic if I was only 10 pounds heavier.

I swear the day I turned 30 I gained 10 pounds. I used to be so skinny, and could eat whatever I wanted. Hate it.

(and how ironic that my word verification is excess)

What works for me is admitting the fact that I am not 20 any more. I can eat cookies but I have to eat a serving size, (every package of everything has this written right on it) that means one cookie a day. That is my treat for the day. I exercise, and try to be active. Sorry being in your 30 sucks. I have been here for 5 years now and it doesn't get better. Buck up and accept it and do whatever you have to do to make yourself happy. Whether that means eating what you want and being fat and happy, or sacrificing what you want and being skinny and happy. You have to decide.

Aaron and I are doing Body for Life. I can even do it while I am pregnant so it isn't a diet it just helps you pick better foods. I have so much more energy and I'm not even retaining any water - yet. Good luck, although I think you look amazing all the time.

I TRY to limit my cookie making (and eating) to once a week. Doesn't always happen, but that's the goal. Just don't be too hard on yourself, Sher! You're smokin' hot for a mama of 3!

I'm not quite 30 yet, but as each year goes by it gets harder and harder for me to drop the pounds. I'm kind of where you are because what used to work for me just isn't doing it any more. And it's kind of depressing.

You're probably right that it's the cookies. Right around 30, it took a ton more effort to lose baby fat and all that for me, too.

I've been picking and snacking more lately--not much, but then, it doesn't take much for me anymore. I've put on a lot lately, and it ain't pretty.

I'll tell you what doesn't work for me. All that pepperming candy I've been eating.
I really don't give it much effort I guess, and that shows.
The best success I had was when i worked at Lowes unloading their truck. Lots of heavy lifting, running around that store, and not eating in the evening. I think I dropped twenty or so pounds in about six months. Of course, I've packed it all back on and then some.
I do think positive thinking helps a bit too. I had started to lose a bit in the past six months, when I changed my frame of mind. But somewhere along the way, I went back to my old ways of thinking--thinking negative thoughts about myself.

I have a hard time now and I am not quite 30, so I guess that means I have to work harder to be able to look like you when I am 30. I think you look amazing, I don't think you have anything to worry about....but we are always so much harder on ourselves!
